Bill Lawyer, Marshalltown acoustical guitarist, played for residents of The Mayflower Community’s Health Center and Beebe Assisted Living on Friday, March 11th. Bill describes himself a “finger-style flat-picking guitarist.” Playing since he was 15 years old, Bill performed a variety of music with special interest in Kris Kristofferson, Hank Williams, and Kenny Rogers. — Bob
On Tuesday, March 1st, The Mayflower Community (Grinnell IA) celebrated Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras) in the Health Center and Beebe Assisted Living. Residents donned Mardi Gras masks, beads, and hats while enjoying photos, history, and a trivia quiz. It may have been cold outside but assisted living residents were able to warm up during a tea party Friday afternoon on January 21st in Mayflower’s Beebe Assisted Living. The Foodservices staff made homemade finger sandwiches, pinwheel cookies, and Napoleon pastries and offered mixed nuts. They helped serve using the beautiful China teapots and teacups

Recently, blankets were given to residents of The Mayflower Community’s Health Center and Beebe Assisted Living. Most were made by the “Quilt Ladies” at the Ripley United Church of Christ in Traer, Iowa. Others were made by local groups and individuals. The Traer Quilt Ladies have been making and donating blankets and quilts to Mayflower
Grinnell’s The Mayflower Community has re-instituted regular Chapel services. A function of the Mayflower Residents Association, Mayflower’s Spiritual Life Committee coordinates weekly non-denominational services in the Kiesel Theatre for independent living residents. In addition, Mayflower’s Community Life and Wellness staff arrange similar services for Health Center and Beebe Assisted Living residents in the Carman Center.
On Monday, January 3rd, residents of Mayflower’s Beebe Assisted Living had the opportunity to sample a popular Hawaiian treat. Musubi is a simple, hand-held snack food. It has its origins in World War II with spam musubi, a take-off of Japanese onigiri, a pickled or salty protein with rice wrapped in a black seaweed paper.
On Tuesday, December 30th, singer/guitarist Dennis Perry performed The Mayflower Community’s last concert of 2021. He played for a physically-distanced crowd of Mayflower Health Center and Beebe Assisted Living residents in the Carman Center. As one of the volunteer roles played by Grinnell College students in The Mayflower Community, SLWS students take on various activities with Health Center and Beebe Assisted Living residents. The Student Leadership Work Study (SLWS) program requires prospective volunteers to apply, be interviewed, and be selected to be accepted into the program. Organized by Mayflower’s
