Steve Langerud, Executive Director of The Mayflower Community (Grinnell IA), announces that two free-standing Harwich Terrace patio homes will be built. Beginning in late 2015, Mayflower began filling the 26 contemporary apartments in the new Watertower Square building on Broad Street between 1st and 2nd avenues. Langerud shared that “During this period, Mayflower suspended the building of Harwich Terrace patio homes. Now that the Watertower Square apartments are all full, it is time for expansion of the Harwich Terrace homes, which are also full.”

According to Bob Mann, Sales & Marketing Director, “Mayflower maintains a ‘wait-list’ of prospects who have filed accepted applications for membership. ‘Active’ members on the wait-list are contacted in chronological order when homes or opportunities to build become available. There are a number of active wait-list members awaiting a Harwich Terrace patio home.”

Harwich is the port city in England from which the Mayflower ship sailed in 1620. The first Mayflower patio homes were built north of the current Health Center on sloping ground, thus “Harwich Terrace.” “Patio home” is the generic term for Harwich Terrace homes, 48 of which already surround Mayflower’s Health Center, Beebe Assisted Living, and independent living apartment buildings. Patio home distinguishes them as having outside space for planting and for leisure and entertainment.

Mayflower’s Director of Facilities Management, Jack Morrison explains, “The Mayflower Community owns a number of parcels of land abutting the current campus. Two of those residential lots located at the northeast corner of State and Hamilton streets will be developed with new homes. We are planning now for construction to begin in the spring of 2020.”

Morrison serves as general contractor for the homes with local contractors bidding to supply the labor and materials. Within the bounds of the land space, residents can choose exterior and interior designs and finishes for their own homes. Of the current 48 Harwich Terrace patio homes, no two are alike.

Currently, there are 207 independent living Mayflower residents. 78 residents live in Harwich Terrace patio homes. The others live in the six campus apartment buildings, including 42 in the new Watertower Square apartments. Mayflower independent living residents have priority access at reduced rates to healthcare space in Beebe Assisted Living and Health Center rehab and long-term care. Grinnell’s Total Rehab® provides physical, occupational, and speech therapy for Mayflower residents.
