Greek Dinner at Mayflower

Last night (January 23rd), Mayflower Community residents and guests enjoyed a winter getaway to the Mediterranean with a Greek theme dinner. Sponsored monthly by the Mayflower Residents Association Social Committee, the Mayflower themed dinner events feature a Buckley Dining Room social time with wines and specialty drinks along with hors d’oeuvres followed by food from another land.

Hosted by residents Arnie and Harriet Adelberg, last night was no exception. As one resident has previously observed, “Living at Mayflower is like being on a cruise ship without a port of call.” Last night it stopped in Greece.

The evening led off with conversation (of course!) and libations, wines, non-alcoholic bubbly, Spiced Wine Hippocrates, and Ouzo.

Appetizers included baba ghannouj (cooked eggplant, olive oil, and garlic salad), hummus, grape leaves, feta, olives, and spanakopita (a rich pie stuffed with spinach, onions, cheeses and herbs that are all enfolded by crispy, flaky phyllo dough).

The buffet featured over a dozen options, including baked eggplant moussaka, pastitsio (a layered Greek casserole of macaroni and seasoned ground lamb, topped with a thick cream sauce), baked fish Souvlakia, skewered steak Souvlakia, lemon chicken oregano, plaki (a Greek dish known in English as giant baked beans), carrots and honey, and Sunday bread.

The meal was topped off with delectable Greek desserts of milk pie, sesame Sunday cookies, and Greek wedding cookies.

Depending on the time of day you are reading this, our guess is that your mouth is watering!
