“Snow and Grass…That’s Why We Live at Mayflower!”

By 8:00am on Wednesday morning, December 30th, after the prior day’s 8+ inch snowfall in Grinnell, snow removal was humming along. The Mayflower Community’s 10 lineal miles of driveways, sidewalks, and parking lots on this 35-acre campus were mostly clear of the heavy wet snow. Snow blowers, blades, sweepers, scoops, and shovels in the hands of the 15-member Facilities staff members had been at it since early afternoon the day before.

Some years ago, a Grinnell native who had lived her entire adult life in San Diego was moving into Mayflower during a heavy February snowstorm. In response to an apology to her for the inconvenience, she responded, “You don’t get it. I am moving here because I want to again experience the seasons. I will be sitting at the big windows in my apartment watching your staff move this beautiful snow. This is perfect!”
