Mayflower Residents Talk with College Students

Professor Ann Ellis, PhD brought 13 Grinnell College students to The Mayflower Community on Wednesday, October 16th to participate in small group discussions with Mayflower residents.

As an assignment for Professor Ellis’ Adult Development class, the students gathered information about how cultural changes have impacted the lives of the 14 residents who attended. Specifically, residents were asked to talk about how events in the greater society, such as economic recession, the development of radio or television, and advances in medicine have influenced the course of individual adult lives.

Professor Ellis, on Grinnell College faculty since 1994, teaches classes on psychology and child development in addition to supervising the operation of the Grinnell College Preschool Laboratory.

Besides rousing conversation, the participants shared cookies and refreshments. The activity will be repeated on December 9th, when the students will gather information about how social relationships, such as family and friends, change and support individuals as they move through adulthood.
