Mayflower Mahjong Anyone?

(Pictured are residents Joan Baker and Rey Evans)

In the Mayflower Community there are two versions of Mahjong being played—American Mahjong on Mondays at 1:00pm and Oriental Mah-Jongg on Wednesdays at 6:30pm. Both groups play in the third-floor Buckley building lounge. This historical game of strategy and tiles, developed during the Qing Dynasty in China, is engrossing as card tables of three or four players start with 13 “tiles” and play off draws and discards to form winning hands. Similar to the card game “Rummy,” Mahjong has become increasingly popular in the U.S. Actress Julia Roberts plays weekly with friends in order to relax. If you are interested in knowing more or joining in on the fun, contact Mayflower resident via our main number, 641-236-6151.
