Getting Ahead of the Flu at Mayflower

Oh, the dreaded flu! It is on the way again. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Flu activity in the U.S. is currently low, but flu season is approaching. Now is the time to get a flu vaccine.”

The CDC recommends that everyone six months and older get a flu vaccine by the end of October.

At The Mayflower Community (Grinnell IA), flu shots have now been given to all staff and all healthcare residents, with the exception of those with a doctor’s excuse. The Mayflower policy is that a flu shot is mandatory unless there is a doctor’s exemption. We are always doing our best to keep the dastardly flu virus away from our campus.

In addition, UnityPoint Health—Grinnell Public Health provided a flu shot clinic for independent living residents on Wednesday, October 14th. They had available the scarce high-dose vaccine, recommended for people 65 and older.

To deal with the double threat of COVID-19 and the flu, at Mayflower we not only ask everyone get a flu shot, but continue to emphasize face masks, social distancing, small groups, and liberal use of hand sanitizers, disinfectant wipes, and most importantly, constant hand washing…the right way.

So far, it’s working!
