Documentary Video Series Kicks Off at Mayflower

A new series of video documentaries about current issues will be playing for Mayflower Community residents and guests in the Kiesel Theatre. Resident Harley Henry, who will then offer a wrap-up discussion at the conclusion, will introduce the movies.

Entitled “Matters of Conscience,” the movies are designed to provide background on current topics. The first in the series, “Sex Trafficking in America,” presented by PBS Frontline, told the story of young women coerced into prostitution and one police unit’s work to combat it. The movie played on December 19th.

The next two will be offered at 2:30pm in the comfortable Kiesel Theatre:

  • “Rise of the Superstorms” – Thursday, January 16th. In this PBS Nova, the story is told how in just one month Houston, Florida, and the Caribbean were changed forever by three monster hurricanes.
  • “Blue Gold: World Water Wars” – Thursday, February 20th. This Purple Turtle Films and PBS special, makes the case that wars of the future will be fought over water, rather than oil as is now the case.

Harley, a PhD from Johns Hopkins University, was professor of English at Macalester College, St. Paul, Minnesota from 1966 to 2004. During that stint, he taught courses that included film studies.

What is the source of the title of this film series? Harley quotes Jiminy Cricket, “Let your conscience by your guide.”
