A Leader in the Retirement Industry Tallies a Series of 'Firsts

Edwards Hall

The Mayflower has a rich tradition of innovative and progressive leadership. Mayflower's commitment to its residents and to the needs of the citizenry within the community of Grinnell is demonstrated by many examples of innovative "firsts."

  • Mayflower was the first retirement community in Iowa to offer individual kitchens in each apartment.
  • Mayflower introduced Grinnell's first Meals OnWheels program in 1971. Before being moved to the present site at the community center, meals were initially prepared in Mayflower kitchens and are delivered to Grinnell area residents by Mayflower resident volunteers.
  • Grinnell's first adult Day Care program was introduced by Mayflower in 1974 but was discontinued for lack of adequate utilization. In 1987 Caring Adults Inc. was created and the adult day care program was located on Mayflower property for 9 years prior to its adoption and relocation by Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
  • Grinnell's first infant day care program (for infants under the age of two) was also located on Mayflower property next to the adult day care center in 1987 before its relocation to the Grinnell Community Day Care Center site on Penrose Ave.
  • Mayflower provided leadership in the development of Monropark (1974), Brookside East (1976), Brookside West (1977), and Brookside South (1982) which offer rent-subsidized apartments for elderly and disabled persons.
  • The first licensed residential care facility for the elderly in Poweshiek County was constructed at the Mayflower in 1983. This addition offered the level of support services commonly found in assisted living facilities today, long before "assisted living" was popularized.
  • Mayflower provided the leadership for the development of Pearl Street apartments in 1990. This was the first housing project of its kind in the state of Iowa and the Station Clubhouse program supplied by the Poweshiek County Mental Health Center was in itself an innovative success.
  • In 1986 Mayflower constructed Grinnell's first duplex style retirement homes. These duplex homes offer individual ownership. (A key feature that entitles the residents to receive no less than 70% of the resale price of their homes is the most generous in the area).
  • In l993 Mayflower created Grinnell's first and only CCDI unit. This is a specially licensed nursing care facility designed for the care of persons with Alzheimer's Disease and related disorders. It is the only Alzheimer's facility recognized and licensed by the state of Iowa in Poweshiek County.
  • In 1997 Mayflower developed 10 Assisted Living suites. This was Grinnell’s and Poweshiek County’s first assisted living facility certified by the state of Iowa.
